This is one of my favorite sports card sets and that includes sets from all sports. This is the first of many articles that I will post about collecting golf sports. The 2001 Upper Deck Golf card set features a wide range of cards of golfers from every era of professional golf. For that reason, it is a great set of cards for both the casual and seasoned sports card collector.
Rookie Cards
One of the reasons I like this set of golf cards is because the 2001 Upper Deck Golf card set is loaded with a fantastic selection of rookie cards. This golf card set marked the first time in almost a decade that complete sets of licensed golf cards were produced. Therefore, the 2001 Upper Deck Golf card set features rookie cards for golfers who were already PGA Tour veterans.
Rookie card collectors will love this set. After all, where else could you find a set of trading cards that boasts among its huge selection of rookie cards, the first cards of stars of the stature of Tiger Woods, Sergio Garcia, David Duval, Chris DiMarco, Adam Scott and Mike Weir?
Legends of Golf
If you love the history and tradition of the game of golf, then you are going to really appreciate the “Legends” cards that run from #53 Jack Nicklaus through to #68 Tom Weiskopf . The cards between these two all-time favorites include golfing legends like Arnold Palmer, Chi Chi Rodriguez and even the often entertaining and always controversial television commentator Gary McCord.
Young Guns
Perhaps, it is appropriate that the “Legends” card sequence gives way to a run of twenty cards featuring the next generation of golfers. The “Young Guns” entry in the set, features the rookie cards of some of the younger golfers on the PGA Tour including JJ Henry and Adam Scott.
Jack Nicklaus
There are several cards of Tiger Woods in the set, including his rookie card. But, Upper Deck did not ignore the golfer that many consider the greatest of them all, Jack Nicklaus. The 2001 Upper Deck set includes a multiple card feature about the “Golden Bear”. Each card features a picture and story about a defining moment in Nicklaus’ great golf career.
There are many other great theme-based sections in this 200-card set. The photography is Upper Deck’s usual high quality. The stories on the back of the cards are interesting to read.
The choice of golfers for inclusion in the set is outstanding. But there are two omissions, that are difficult to understand. It is a puzzle why neither Vijay Singh nor Phil Mickelson is included in the set.
Insert Sets
Tiger’s Tales: Ratio: 1 per pack
This 30-card set provides 30 different highlights from the golfing career of Tiger Woods. This is an easy to complete subset with some great photos of Tiger as a youngster.
The rest of the insert series in this set are much more difficult to find. The most difficult insert sets are probably the Player’s Ink, the Tour Threads and Tour Gear cards. The hobby prices for these items tend to reflect the scarcity.
Despite the scarcity of some of the insert sets, the Upper Deck 2001 Golf set is a great collectible for hobbyists or fans of the game of golf.
